Fertilizer trade is a truly international activity due to the geographic locations from where certain fertilizers originate. Urea producers are mostly centralized in the petroleum producing countries as urea is composed of the petroleum by-product ammonia. Phosphate and potash based fertilizers are mostly produced in countries where the rock is extracted. Compound fertilizers are manufactured all over the world. Exports are done southwards and northwards. Industrialized and developing countries both export and import. Consumers are distributed all over the world where there are agricultural activities.
